Three Tips to Make Grooming Your Dog Easier
When it comes to grooming your dog you have two choices, do it yourself or load your dog into your car and drive them to your local groomer. Paying someone to groom your dog can be pretty expensive but most people think grooming their dog themselves is too hard, that is just not true! Here are 3 tips to make grooming your dog yourself much easier:
1. Give your dog a bath. The first and foremost aspect of grooming is bathing. It is relatively easy to do it yourself (however, it is somewhat dependent on your pup’s temperament). All you will need is a bath tub, dog shampoo, an old towel, and a drain strain (hair catcher). If you have a detachable shower head, it is an added plus. Simply fill the tub high enough so that the water comes comfortably up to your dog’s knees. Then, begin washing their coat with the tearless dog shampoo. Be sure to begin at the head, and move methodically down to the tip of their tail. Once you are done rinsing, get your old towel and dry your dog off as much as they allow. If it is warm outside, many owners opt to let their dog in the backyard or on the back deck to dry off instead.
2. Nail trimming. Trimming your dog’s nails is also very important when it comes to their care. If their nails are too long, they have the potential to snag on things, not to mention tear and bleed. Also, if a dog’s nails are too long can, it can even develop joint problems over time (primarily knees and ankles). To clip your dog’s nails, you must purchase special nail trimmers; these can be found at any pet supply store. When clipping your pup’s nails, be sure to follow detailed instructions closely…otherwise; you could cut the quick, which would be painful and uncomfortable for your dog.
If you want your dog to get a haircut, you may to leave that side of the grooming to the professionals. But, if you need a simple bath, ear cleaning, and nail trim, there is no reason why you shouldn’t do it yourself! It saves some money, and it also gives you a chance to take care of your dog personally as you have this bonding experience together. Good luck in your grooming endeavors!
