What Should I feed my new puppy?
|
Puppies when born are solely dependent on their mother's milk for nourishment. As they mature their diet, nutritional needs and stomach bacterial flora changes. Their diet goes from liquid to solids and a new bacterial and enzymatic flora must develop. This development is crucial in the puppy's ability to absorb, metabolize and use nutrients to make the building blocks of a healthy, happy puppy and a great adult dog. This whole period is commonly referred to as weaning and is very stressful to a puppy.
As breeders, we introduce a feeding program that allows the puppy to adjust and thrive. This assures us that normal growth and development will occur with this puppy. We are equipped to handle this situation and will not ship a puppy that has not fully completed the weaning transition.
When you receive your puppy, it is best to continue the feeding program initially started by the breeder as this will reduce stress to the puppy and it will not have food as an additional hurdle. We include a small sample bag for this transition period. If you do not continue with the same feeding formula, a new weaning process occurs which will introduce the need for a new stomach flora and stress to your new puppy and along with adjusting to new people, sounds and smells which may cause problems. |
