| Agreatdog, Iowa Born Chow Chow Puppies, Shih Tzu Puppies and Sheltie Puppies Feeding Question #2 |
What if I can't find your brand of puppy food?
|
You can gradually wean any puppy to any new food. I recommend mixing the sample bag we provide you with the new food. Check the ingredients and make sure they are similar as that will make the stomach adjust easier. It is generally not recommended to give supplements to dog food as these are typically balanced and enough nutrition for the puppy

How long should I feed a puppy food?
|
Typically a puppy has additional nutritional needs for about a year or less. Most premium dog foods are blended to meet those additional needs. Look for a dog food that is "100% complete and balanced". Dog feed that can print this phrase on their label, have submitted their feed for testing and it has conformed to the minimal requirements of the federal standard of identity of dog food, nutritionally speaking. The protein as well as other ingredients are available for digestion and not just a stuffer to make the product look good.
On feeding Chow puppies, care must be taken not to feed too rich a dog food that is high in protein and calcium. This will allow the skeleton to grow faster than the muscles and weak ligaments can result. On active dogs, this will make the puppy more susceptible to torn ACL and hip bones popping out. This is due to an injury and not a genetic problem.
