My dog is vomiting yellow stuff and appears to be sick, is this serious and what should I do?

Occasionally dogs will vomit and mostly it is a one time, minor thing and they will be fine. Typically, you will see a yellow Bile/Saliva type vomit. If this persists for days, attention may be needed, otherwise the condition will self-correct. But sometimes a problem is the culprit which requires medical attention. If a dog goes off feed for several days and is very lethargic, you need to call a veterinarian immediately. However, be aware, it is not that unusual for a dog to skip a few meals.
Vomiting can be caused by an obstruction in the GI tract, which would require medical intervention. Typically, a Barium Enema is given and the GI tract is viewed by ultra sound to detect what is obstructing and causing problems. Obstructions mainly are caused by the swallowing foreign objects or some types of Raw Hide Chews which the dog cannot pass.
Another cause for vomiting could be Gastritis, which is an inflammation of the stomach lining. This typically occurs from a change of diet, feeding table scraps or if a dog eats garbage and toxic things. The dog is not used to such things and its system cannot digest those items, which in turn can make an acidic stomach and upset it along with a possible inflammation of the GI Tract lining. Most commonly, this is treated by drugs to stop vomiting and fluids may be given. Often no food is offered until the gastric upset is improved, after which a bland diet is started. Pepto Bismal will sometimes aid in re-coating the stomach lining.
